Delight in me and I will give you the desires of your heart.
Delight in me and I will give you the desires of your heart.
Psalm 37:4
Delight yourself in the LORD
and he will give you the desires of your heart.
(NIV Bible)
Delight yourself in the LORD
and he will give you the desires of your heart.
(NIV Bible)
I remember when I was a new Christian, my greatest fear was that God was going to make me doing something that I desperately didn't want do to. Maybe He would send me to a far away country where I had no desire to go to. Maybe He would make me marry someone that I wasn't attracted to?
My basic understanding of the Christian life revolved around the idea that true service to God required a sacrifice that would make me do things that were opposite to my heart's desires. In this scripture passage, God is saying that if simply delight in Him and enjoy His friendship, that He will give us the desires of our heart. I believe that the desires that God is referring to are not necessarily our momentary impulses, but rather the deep-seeded longings in our heart that stand the test of time.
I know as a father, there is nothing more that brings joy to my heart than seeing my children receive the desires of their hearts. I want the absolute best for them and I believe that is the heart of our Heavenly Father for us as well.
Through the years, God has dismantled many of my misconceptions about His true nature. As it turns out, I didn't marry someone I wasn't attracted to, but ended up marrying a wonderful woman who has completely surpassed my hopes for a wife. And God didn't send me to a far off country that I hated, but has placed me in a ministry that has far exceeded all my expectations. God does love us and wants to give us the desires of our hearts. So delight in Him and watch what happens.
PRAYER
Father, I want to take the time to delight in You today. You are a wonderful Father and I love You with all my heart! Thank You for making me the way I am, and for promising to give me the secret desires of my heart. I trust in Your timing and I commit all my dreams and plans into Your tender care. In the name of Your beloved Son Jesus I pray, AMEN.
